Blepharoplasty (Eyelid) Procedure- Expectations and Recovery

How A Blepharoplasty Procedure Changes Your Face

A blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, helps to improve the overall appearance of your face and wake up your complexion. Everyone ages differently, so it’s not always necessary to have your entire face treated when you have your eyes done.

What You Can Expect from a Blepharoplasty

  • What the Procedure Addresses: Individuals who seek out an eyelid lift do so for a variety of reasons. These can include heavy eyelids, wrinkled skin in the eye area, excess skin, muscle, or fat tissue, puffy undereye bags, and anything causing a droopy, sagging, tired appearance. This procedure may also be undertaken by individuals who have hooded eyes and are seeking to get more eyelid space, or by those who have monolids.
  • How the Procedure is Performed: The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthetic. Depending on the desired outcome or severity, you and the surgeon may decide that you wish to perform the blepharoplasty on either the upper eyelid, the lower, or both. For the upper eyelid, an incision is made in the crease of the eyelid to help hide the appearance of scarring. From there, excess tissue is removed, and adjustments are made to the muscle and fat underneath the skin, and then the skin is sewn back up. Under eyelid surgery is done through an incision just below the lashes. Fat is removed or repositioned, and muscle is tightened to help reduce the appearance of puffiness, bulging, sagging, and dark circles. It will take approximately 2-3 hours on average to have both the upper and lower eyelid procedures completed.
  • Recovery Expectations: Most individuals recover relatively quickly, often within a week. People will usually take a week off work, as there is often bruising around the eye area, and another doctor’s visit is required after approximately five days to remove the stitches you have.
