Laser vision correction is a procedure that refers to the correction of ones refractive error to eliminate or reduce ones need for spectacle correcting glasses or contact lens wear. By applying a laser to the cornea, either below the corneal epithelium or lasik flap, most refractive errors can be corrected. Fortunately, with significant advancements in technology – complications are uncommon.
The most common sensation individuals feel after the procedure is dry eye – which in some cases can be transient (weeks to months) and in other cases can be long term. Fortunately, whether the symptoms are mild or severe, there is escalating treatments that can be effective in managing dry eye. Although the refractive results are durable, and depending on the type of laser technique that is employed and/or the degree of initial correction – regression of ones prescription may be possible which may necessitate an enhancement procedure. Other visual disturbances such as glare or haloes are uncommon. Severe sight-threatening complications such as infection, corneal ectasia, flap complications or secondary retinal complications are very uncommon – and with the advent of state-of-the-art Femtosecond lasers – “blade-free” flaps are created in a very safe and predictable fashion. A thorough pre-operative screening is necessary to ensure individuals are candidates for laser vision correction – such diligence will ensure a proper selection of individuals suitable for this procedure. A complimentary screening assessment can be arranged at U Eye Laser Cosmetic.
