It's all about you and your eye health. At the Dry Eye Institute, our goal is to meet your needs both in the clinic and at home. Our knowledgeable doctors and staff are dedicated to sharing tips, insights, and educational resources to help you take charge of your eye care and maintain clear, comfortable vision.
LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) are both commonly used to remove or reduce the need for spectacle use. LASIK at our facility involves the creation (by laser) of a partial thickness flap in the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye) and then further laser application to the corneal bed to reshape the cornea and thus reduce spectacle prescription. This is all laser driven and no blade is used in this procedure at UELC; thus accuracy is excellent. Patients have minimal discomfort after LASIK and have excellent vision from day 1 although this will improve further over the next few days.
PRK reshapes the cornea using the same laser without creation of the ‘corneal flap’. This is preferred in cases where the cornea is in the thinner range of normal to maintain corneal strength and shape after the procedure. As a surface treatment, there is some mild discomfort for about 2 days or so after treatment but measures can be taken to minimize this.
At UELC, we are the first eye clinic in Vaughan to offer customized iDesign and Custom Vue treatments. These personalised treatments akin to a fingerprint of the eye can be applied to both LASIK and PRK with excellent visual results for the patient.
